What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Prieto Picudo continues to teach me the most about soft approaches to winemaking. Working with this Spanish variety has refined how I think about gentle extraction and letting the grape guide the process rather than imposing too much on it.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Early on, I explored Vermentino, Nebbiolo, and Mencía. Each one opened my eyes to different possibilities. Those experiences shaped my appreciation for varieties that don’t follow the mainstream playbook and how they can express something unique in our climate.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? The challenge of discovering how to finesse the nuances of the final wine. Vintners and growers are constantly learning, adjusting farming, timing, cellar work, to bring out what makes each grape distinctive. It’s problem-solving that keeps the work interesting.
