What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Cabernet Franc – it’s the parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenere, yet it is often used almost exclusively as a blending component. I believe it deserves a starring role, which is why I make 100% Cabernet Franc, and a Cab Franc-dominant blend!!

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Trebbiano – like sunshine in a bottle, it’s the perfect wine for all the fresh seafood we have access to right off our docks. While it is virtually unheard of as a domestic grape here in the US, it is the most widely planted white grape in Italy, where it is also used to make balsamic vinegar, and France, where it is known as Ugni Blanc and also used in Cognac and Armagnac production – talk about a versatile grape that makes some of the best things in the world, including of course an amazing white wine!

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? I love introducing undiscovered grapes to a new audience that would otherwise have never had the opportunity to try them. There is something so awesome and rewarding when you see someone’s eyes light up at a whole new variety!

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Picpoul Blanc is probably our favorite grape to work with; always brings a great acidity, green apple character and perfect for California’s climate.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Bourboulenc! We were the first to plant Bourboulenc in the U.S. and knew it was a blending grape, but was surprised at it’s great acidity, salinity, notes of cantaloupe and kumquat. This grape loves to be paired with fresh sweet corn and is a staff favorite!

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Love the uniqueness of these grapes that you can’t find in the store!

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Tasting CA versions of Rhone varietals such as Picpoul and Mourvedre’. Learning there was so much more out there than the classics

About: Alamati is a shared project by two best friends and local Santa Barbara winemakers. Cooper Allebrand and Niko Comati both work as assistant winemakers for prominent wineries in Santa Barbara. We both grew up together in Santa Barbara and started Alamati out of a shared passion for wine, food, and our local community. Santa Barbara County’s uniquely diverse growing regions allow us to work with the grape varieties we love without compromising quality. Lesser-known grapes that began as an experiment for us have become a crucial aspect of our project’s identity. Our goal is to make delicious wines while also working to support and build relationships with local artists, chefs, and musicians. The name Alamati is a blend of our two last names and is a representation of our friendship and 50/50 share of both business and winemaking.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? We started our project out of love for Nebbiolo. While Nebbiolo is not “undiscovered” by any means worldwide, it is not an easy variety to find in Santa Barbara. Our experience with it has shown that it grows beautifully here. Niko was fortunate to be able to work a harvest in Piemonte and brought back a firsthand knowledge of how classic producers make it. Working with Nebbiolo also led us to add Dolcetto to our collection, which has become one of our favorites as a perfect complement to go along with our Nebbiolo. Dolcetto also probably fits the “undiscovered” label better.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Dolcetto was the grape we discovered at the start of our project. The grower we work with recommended adding it to our program due to the fact that Nebbiolo needs much more time in barrel for aging. Dolcetto has become our everyday drinker. It needs very little aging time and jumps out of the glass in terms of fruit and energy. It is a fan favorite and something that is very versatile in terms of food pairing as well.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Mourvèdre. When Mourvèdre is farmed in the right place, it transcends its reputation as a savory blender and offers incredible complexity.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Stand alone Mourvèdre was new to us in the 00’s and Paso Robles is an incredible place to farm it. When it’s grown in a place with the right kind of sunshine, it’s always a favorite.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? So often in the US, we’re fed the same 6 or 8 grape varieties. Every wine list and every grocery shelf has so many of the same wines. Part of what we love about wine is the range and diversity of grapes.  Where they can grow, and how they’re expressed through a bottle of wine. Tasting something that tastes nothing like anything I’ve ever tried before is the best and keeps me coming back for more!

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Counoise

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? In 2010, the love affair with single-variety Counoise started with our dry-farmed estate fruit. In earlier years, we blended with Grenache or in our Estate GSM, which we still do and love, but there is something special about a single-variety Counoise.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? The surprise and excitement of a new discovery. Usually, these grapes are made to more authentic expressions, which open a whole new realm of wine and wine drinking.

It’s always a joy to share wines made with lesser-known varietals with our guests and friends, and to widen the consumer’s palate by introducing them to a side of wine where they don’t know what to expect. A wine that initiates a good conversation and brings people together is what excites us the most.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Nebbiolo. I was not sure how it would grow in Lodi, but I am growing it in Clements Hills.

The solar-powered winery includes a spacious tasting room and an outdoor patio area with panoramic views. The Estate Vineyard, a testament to their commitment to quality, was planted in the 1970s at an elevation of 1560 ft. It spans over 20 acres and is home to a variety of grapes; Sauvignon Blanc, Barbera, Cabernet, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and old vine Zinfandel. What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Grenache Blanc. Beckmen Vineyards was the first winery to bottle a 100% Grenache Blanc wine in Santa Barbara County, before it was recognized by our government as a varietal. Since the varietal was not recognized by the government, we had to label our first vintage in 2001 “Grenache White”. We’ve made this wine from a tiny 0.6-acre block every year since.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Grenache Blanc, discovered it at a Hospice du Rhone tasting, and was struck by the diversity of style in the variety.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Teaching customers about the history, styles, and our interpretation, and turning them on to something new and different!

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? My favorite undiscovered grape to work with is Falanghina. I always find it delicious, but I have a hard time describing its wonderful flavors, aromas, and texture. Its evolution through fermentation and maturation is beguiling.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? In 2013 I was thrilled to take on my first harvest at Benessere, and with that the opportunity to take a crack at making my first ever Sagrantino and Aglianico. Although I had enjoyed both varieties many times prior, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to work with these grapes in Napa Valley. I had them in side-by-side open-top fermenters so I could take in as much sensory information about the fermentations as possible. I was surprised that these two tannic, late-ripening varieties seemed to want very different winemaking treatment, with the Sagrantino thriving with as many punchdowns a day as I could give it, while the Aglianico seemed to want much gentler treatment, with just a single punchdown each day.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? All of the many undiscovered grapes we work with revitalize the joy of winemaking. It feels like an adventure discovering new flavors. It’s so much fun to try to capture the spirit of a new-to-me grape variety.
