What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Sangiovese in the late 1990’s and Grenache, Barbera, Vermentino in early 2000’s.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? They are ideally suited to our climate because they are native to the Mediterranean-which results in terroir-driven wines with balance. They are easy to make into interesting wines using traditional artisan winemaking methods.

About:  Vigo Cellars is a family-owned, artisan winery dedicated predominately to Rhone-style wines.  Vigo’s first release was a single vineyard Syrah from the Avila Valley in the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA, with the portfolio later expanding to include Picpoul Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Grenache.
With a focus on the crafting of small lots, Vigo Cellars utilizes new world winemaking techniques as well as time honored, old-world methods to express each vineyard’s terroir, while highlighting the varietal’s characteristics.

Named “Vigo” as a tribute to the Rodrigues family heritage, the brand embodies the spirit of adventure.  With a journey that began in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, and included travels to Argentina, the Hawaiian Islands, and San Francisco, California, the Rodrigues family settled in the San Joaquin Valley in the late-1930’s, farming vineyards and almonds.  Three generations later, we are continuing this quest with Vigo Cellars – artisan crafted wines from select vineyards in the Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo Coastal and Santa Barbara County wine growing regions.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? We love our white wine portfolio (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc), but equally so, we’ve had the opportunity to work with Grenache throughout AVA’s on the Central Coast, which is a dynamic line-up to experience in a vertical tasting to experience the different terroirs from Paso, Edna Valley, and Santa Barbara County.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Picpoul Blanc. I discovered it early in my wine marketing career at a winery where it was used in a white Rhone blend. I had the opportunity to taste it on its own and was excited by its flavor profile, which featured great acidity and liveliness on the palate. It’s a fun wine and perfect to have on-hand for entertaining – a real conversation starter!

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Always great for both longtime wine enthusiasts and novices alike to explore an undiscovered grape variety – a lovely introduction to a new discovery!

About: Vino Noceto Winery has grown to produce 7,000 cases of Sangiovese-based wines, including its traditional Chianti-style Sangiovese, Brunello-style Riserva, and several single-block Sangioveses. In addition, Vino Noceto has consistently produced other high-quality Italian varietals, including Zinfandel from the famed “Original Grandpère Vineyard”, Aglianico, Barbera, Trebbiano, Teroldego, and Sagrantino.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Sangiovese. It is our largest production variety.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Robert Pepi, and established, family winery also located in Napa, California, first planted a stony hillside to Sangiovese in 1983 and then expanded their production to valley floor grapes. Vino Noceto, founded by Jim and Suzy Gullett in Shenandoah Valley, California, took the direction of producing food-friendly Chianti style Sangiovese wines. Their first vines were planted in 1986 in a fallow grain field, including scion wood from the Montevina Il Pioggoine source as well as Biondi Santi (Brunello), Altesino (Brunello), and Isole e Olena (Chianti Classico) sources.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Over the past three decades, California growers and vintners have pursued many grapes outside of the Anything But Cabernet/Chardonnay spectrum. Sangiovese, the wine of central Italy and particularly the Tuscan appellations of Chianti and Brunello, has been one of those. This presentation explores the Italian roots of the noble variety and traces its emergence in California.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Barbera, Souzao, and Viognier

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Making Viognier for the first time in 2024 was a revelation. This grape used in Condrieu primarily tends to be picked over-ripe in California, which makes it a perfume bomb but lacking in weight. We pick ours at 20.5 brix, resulting in a wine that is only 12% alcohol but exhibits orange blossom, flint, and hazelnut and has substantial mid-palate weight.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Wine is a product of context. By context we mean varietal, weather, soil, and all the traditional definitions of terroir. But context also refers to the context you drink it in. There’s a different wine that’s perfect for each mood, for each food, for each moment. With undiscovered grapes, you get to match the moment with the grape. It’s like having a million musicians in your orchestra to choose from, rather than just the most famous 5. And that’s why we love undiscovered grapes. They widen your horizon, they widen your appreciation of wine, and in fact, they widen your taste.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Vermentino. We have been strategically looking for white grape varietals that thrive in East Paso Robles. A neighbor and long-time grower planted some experimental whites up the road from us. We bought a ton from him three years ago and have been in love with the grape ever since. It ripens beautifully, fully expressing its flavors while maintaining acidity. We plan to plant several acres of Vermentino in the next couple of years.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? My first experience with lesser-known grapes was chilled reds like Gamay and Cinsault. Thacher Winery in Paso Robles had a winemaker at the time who loved experimenting by picking early, doing some stem inclusion, as well as some carbonic maceration. The flavors of these varietals were bursting out of the glass without needing heavy body or higher alcohol to express themselves.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Variety is the spice of life. We are blessed in Paso Robles to have so much diversity, from varietals planted to terroirs, winemaker styles to old trends turned new again.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Cinsault

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Visiting many of the amazing wineries in and around the Santa Ynez Valley, the undiscovered grapes are abundant. One of the first we can remember is the variety of Italian varieties at Palmina Wines. Learning about Dolcetto, Vermentino and other Italian grapes being grown in the region was eye-opening.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Undiscovered grapes are so expressive of place and time. It is so much fun to discover new grapes and figure out where they do well and how they compare across the world.
