Beckmen Vineyards

2670 Ontiveros Road, Los Olivos, CA 93441
beckmenvineyards.com

Region: Santa Barbara County

Owners: Tom and Judy Beckmen

Winemaker: Steve Beckmen

About: As the first biodynamically farmed vineyard in Santa Barbara County, we focus on what counts: growing great grapes. We go beyond organic farming by treating the farm as a living organism, avoiding the use of herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, or nitrogen based fertilizer in our vineyards. Our priority is to produce a broad yet deep portfolio of wines to consistently provide a wine experience you can trust, including lesser-known varietals of Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Mourvedre, Counoise, and Viognier.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Grenache Blanc. Beckmen Vineyards was the first winery to bottle a 100% Grenache Blanc wine in Santa Barbara County, before it was recognized by our government as a varietal. Since the varietal was not recognized by the government, we had to label our first vintage in 2001 “Grenache White”. We’ve made this wine from a tiny 0.6-acre block every year since.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Grenache Blanc, discovered it at a Hospice du Rhone tasting, and was struck by the diversity of style in the variety.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Teaching customers about the history, styles, and our interpretation, and turning them on to something new and different!

Benessere Vineyards

1010 Big Tree Road, St. Helena, CA 94574
benesserevineyards.com

Region: Napa Valley

Owners: Benish Family

Winemaker: Matt Reid

About: Benessere Vineyards is a family-owned, estate winery in the heart of St. Helena, dedicated to showcasing the depth, elegance, and age-worthiness of Italian varietals in Napa Valley. Rooted in our estate vineyards and guided by a hands-on, small-lot approach, we focus on wines that balance purity of fruit with structure, texture, and a true sense of place. We’re passionate about championing “undiscovered” grapes—varieties that don’t always get the spotlight, but absolutely deserve it. That’s what makes Benessere a natural fit for the Festival of Undiscovered Grapes: we’ve built our reputation on bringing Italian varietals to the forefront, crafting wines that feel both distinctive and unmistakably Napa. Whether you’re new to these grapes or already a fan, we love sharing the story behind each bottling and why these varieties belong at the table—and in your cellar.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? My favorite undiscovered grape to work with is Falanghina. I always find it delicious, but I have a hard time describing its wonderful flavors, aromas, and texture. Its evolution through fermentation and maturation is beguiling.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? In 2013 I was thrilled to take on my first harvest at Benessere, and with that the opportunity to take a crack at making my first ever Sagrantino and Aglianico. Although I had enjoyed both varieties many times prior, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to work with these grapes in Napa Valley. I had them in side-by-side open-top fermenters so I could take in as much sensory information about the fermentations as possible. I was surprised that these two tannic, late-ripening varieties seemed to want very different winemaking treatment, with the Sagrantino thriving with as many punchdowns a day as I could give it, while the Aglianico seemed to want much gentler treatment, with just a single punchdown each day.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? All of the many undiscovered grapes we work with revitalize the joy of winemaking. It feels like an adventure discovering new flavors. It’s so much fun to try to capture the spirit of a new-to-me grape variety.

Bokisch Vineyards

18921 Atkins Road, Lodi, CA 95240
bokischvineyards.com

Region: Lodi

Owners: Markus & Liz Bokisch

Winemaker: Markus Bokisch

About: Markus and Liz Bokisch have been producing award-winning Spanish varietals since the early 2000s, inspired by their Spanish heritage and love for the country’s wines. They founded Bokisch Vineyards in the Clements Hills of the Lodi, where they specialize in Spanish varietal wines.

The couple met at UC Davis and moved to Spain in 1992 where Markus worked in the renowned Cava-producing town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, while Liz taught English classes. Their love for Spanish food and wine inspired them to produce domestic Spanish varieties upon their return to California.

In 1995, they purchased their Terra Alta Vineyards property in the Clements Hills and imported budwood from select Spanish vineyards in 1998. They planted Las Cerezas Vineyard with Albariño, Tempranillo, and Graciano, each occupying one acre.

In 2000, they began making wine from their estate-grown, organically farmed fruit. Bokisch Vineyards now produces nine Spanish varietals, including Garnacha Blanca, Verdejo, Garnacha, and Monastrell.

In 2012, they launched the Tizona label to experiment with unique French varieties, featuring Malbec, Picpoul Blanc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah among others.

Bokisch Vineyards is thriving as Markus and Liz champion Spanish grape varieties grown in California. They are pioneers, being among the first to produce a Gran Reserva Tempranillo and to cultivate and vinify the Catalan varieties Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada. Excitingly, they are preparing for the release of their first Cava, the traditional Catalan sparkling wine, in early 2025.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Albariño. If there’s one grape that truly defines who we are, it’s Albariño. When we first planted it here in Lodi nearly three decades ago, very few people in California had ever even heard of it. Markus’ childhood summers in Spain, surrounded by the wines of Galicia and Catalonia, inspired us to bring this remarkable grape across the Atlantic and give it a new home in the Clements Hills. Albariño felt like a risk at the time—unproven in California and completely “undiscovered” by the market—but we knew it had the potential to thrive. Lodi’s warm days, cool evenings, and diverse soils give Albariño everything it needs to shine. Today, those early plantings have become the foundation for nearly every Albariño vineyard in the United States. What we love most about Albariño is its versatility and vibrancy. At Terra Alta Vineyard, it bursts with citrus blossoms, crisp green apple, and a refreshing minerality from the volcanic soils. At Las Cerezas Vineyard, its character softens into aromas of orange peel, tropical florals, and a touch of creaminess thanks to sandy loam soils and partial oak aging. Each block tells a different story, and together they show the incredible range of this grape. Over the years, we’ve refined our style—moving from bold, tropical expressions to a fresher, more acid-driven profile that highlights Albariño’s natural elegance. It’s crisp, aromatic, and endlessly food-friendly—perfect for seafood, paella, or simply a warm summer afternoon on the patio. For us, it’s not just a wine, it’s a reflection of our Spanish heritage and our commitment to bringing unique, soulful wines to California. Albariño may have once been “undiscovered,” but today it’s become our signature. It represents our past, our pioneering spirit, and our future—all in one glass.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Discovering Old Vine Carignane. One of our favorite moments of discovery happened right here in Lodi, when we stumbled across a vineyard of Old Vine Carignane. These vines, gnarled and twisted with age, were quietly growing in the sandy soils of a heritage block—overlooked by many, but holding onto decades of history. Carignane isn’t the kind of grape you often see featured on a wine list. In California, it was long considered a blending grape, hidden away in jug wines and rarely celebrated on its own. But when we tasted the fruit from those vines, we knew instantly that it had a voice worth hearing. The wine was alive—bright with red fruit, savory spice, and a depth of character that only comes from vines that have weathered generations. It felt like discovering a hidden treasure, a piece of California’s past ready to be shared with a new generation of wine lovers. Bringing Old Vine Carignane into our portfolio was more than just honoring a forgotten grape. It was about championing heritage, preserving the legacy of these remarkable vineyards, and showing how an “undiscovered” varietal could stand proudly on its own. Today, it’s one of the wines that excites us most to pour in the tasting room—because every glass carries both a sense of history and the thrill of rediscovery.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? At Bokisch Vineyards, we’ve always believed that the joy of wine lies in discovery. There’s something magical about sharing a grape that most people have never heard of, then watching their eyes light up at that first sip. Undiscovered grapes carry a sense of adventure. They invite us to step outside the familiar, to celebrate flavors and traditions that might otherwise remain hidden. They connect us back to Spain—where many of these varietals have centuries of history—while giving us the chance to show how beautifully they can thrive here in California. For us, these grapes aren’t just unique; they’re authentic. They embody our spirit of exploration, our love for the land, and our desire to craft wines that tell a story. Each new planting is a chance to pioneer, to preserve tradition while creating something fresh and exciting for today’s wine drinkers. What we love most about undiscovered grapes is the way they transform curiosity into passion. They turn a simple tasting into an experience, a bottle into a journey, and our vineyards into a bridge between cultures. That’s why we grow them—and why we’ll keep sharing them, one glass at a time.

Camins 2 Dreams

1520 E Chestnut Ct, Lompoc, CA. 93436
camins2dreams.com

Region: Santa Barbara County

Owners/Winemakers: Mireia Taribo & Tara Gomez

About: Camins 2 Dreams was founded in 2017. Our grapes are sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara County with a focus in Sta. Rita Hills and San Benito County. Our philosophy is to make hand-crafted, terroir-driven wines that are fermented with natural yeast and use minimal intervention in the winery, with only minimum amounts of SO2 at bottling. Our wines are also all unfined and unfiltered. We believe wine is made in the vineyard and we want to showcase the typicity of each site where the grapes come from. We source fruit from vineyards that share in the same values of respect for the land and their workers and works e with organic, biodynamic and regenerative farming vineyards.

We are a team of two winemakers, Mireia Taribó and Tara Gomez, wife and wife, whose paths first crossed in 2006 through our work in the wine industry. Our friendship grew through wine and travels, which also sparked our love. Our journey of friendship, love, and wine now continues as together we found our dream winery, Camins 2 Dreams.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Grüner Veltliner

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape?

Mireia: I have been lucky to enjoy forgotten grapes since an early age, being from Spain, most of our local grapes would be considered “forgotten”, even though they are popular in Spain. Ex: Tempranillo, Xarello , Mencia or Graciano to name a few.

Tara: Through my travels through Europe, I felt lucky to expand my palate to many forgotten grapes. One experience in particular was in Languedoc when I tasted Carignan for the first time many years ago. I remember seeing those vines planted along the Mediterranean Sea and was so amazed by that, and the salinity that came from that was truly remarkable, not to mention the dark fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and moderate tannins. Through that experience, Carignan is definitely one of my favorites.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? We love making and teaching consumers about the underrepresented varieties that are not mainstream. There are so many forgotten grapes that deserve the same recognition as the mainstream varieties, and we love preaching about those varieties. We like to research them, learn about them, experiment as we make the wine, and then introduce them to the consumers.

Cary Q Wines

1160 Hopper Ave, Santa Rosa, CA
www.caryqwines.com

Region: Santa Rosa

Owner/Winemaker: Cary Quintana

About: Cary Q Wines was founded in 2014 and stands as a proud, woman-owned and operated winery dedicated to the art of minimal intervention winemaking. With a passion for single vineyard varietals, I partner with organic and sustainably farmed vineyards to create wines that are environmentally clean and express the essence of their origins. My philosophy focuses on showcasing unique microclimates and site-specific grape varietals that often play supporting roles in traditional blends but deserve their moment to shine. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, with Cuban heritage, I pursued my passion for winemaking by moving to Northern California in 2013. As a self-taught winemaker and alumna of the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology Winemaking certification program, I released my first vintage in 2014—a co-fermented Grenache/Mourvedre crafted from organically farmed Sonoma Coast fruit. In the cellar, my low-intervention approach embraces natural acidity, wild fermentation, non-interventionist aging, limited manipulation, and being sensorily vigilant ensuring that each vintage captures pure, vibrant varietal expressions. Inspired by each vintage and varietal, my aging vessels include concrete, stainless steel, and at times neutral French oak puncheons.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Cinsault

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Mourvedre

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? How versatile they can be.

Region: Napa Valley

Owners: Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford

Winemaker: Laura Barrett

About: Founded by Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford, the co-creators of Clif Bar, Clif Family Winery & Farm has been crafting wine in Napa Valley for 20 years. As a B Corp-certified wine and food company, we focus on sustainable practices and farm over 10 varietals at our organically farmed estate vineyards, including Undiscovered Grapes like Malbec and Viognier. We are passionate about sharing delicious wines and the stories behind them.

Viognier is our winemaker’s favorite because it’s expressive and fun to work with. It produces wines bursting with bright fruit and floral aromas—think ripe peach, tangerine, and honeysuckle—with subtle hints of vanilla and spice when lightly oaked. Its versatility in the cellar lets us craft wines that are flavorful, balanced, and easy to enjoy.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? A few years ago, we discovered Picpoul, a crisp, refreshing white grape. What surprised us most was how bright, zesty, and food-friendly it was—perfect for sipping on its own or pairing with meals. We loved it so much that we’re now planting Picpoul in our Napa Valley vineyards, excited to explore its potential and share a truly unique, lesser-known grape with our guests.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? What we love most about undiscovered grapes is the sense of adventure they bring. Each one has its own story, flavors, and personality, and working with them lets us experiment in the vineyard and cellar.

Comunità

132 Plaza Street, Healdsburg, CA 95448
www.comunitawines.com

Region: Sonoma County

Owner: David Drummond

Winemaker: Sam Bilbro

About: Comunità began as a love of wine and sharing with friends. There is nothing more human than to open our arms and to come together to foster community. It seemed only logical to embrace more of this feeling through the medium of wine. We farm Northeastern Italian varieties holistically and intervene minimally in the cellar so that we can authentically express the Italian roots of our wines and the California soil on which they are grown.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? My current favorite is Pinot Grigio, which we’re making into an old-school Italian-style Ramato. Ramato Pinot Grigios have the color of a darker rosé, the astringency of a red wine, and the refreshing qualities of a white wine. This variety is definitely not undiscovered, but made this way, it showcases the lesser-known side of a known quantity.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Finding Schioppettino was like finding the opposite other half to my love for Nebbiolo. Instead of delicate and then powerful, it leans into a dense mid-palate and pepper-forward flavors while holding onto its balance.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Removing familiar elements from a situation where wine is involved is one of the best ways to reduce pretense and increase conversation. When no one at the table has a frame of reference for Friulano grown in the Russian River Valley, everyone at the table has equal say in the discussion.
