What is your favorite undiscovered grape? It’s unfair to ask us this! So, let’s go with the two rarest grapes we grow. On the white side Picardan. When we planted our half-acre it increased the world’s footprint by 40%. And on the red side, Vaccarese, where when we bottled it in 2019, we think it was the first 100% Vaccarese from anywhere in the world in 50+ years.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? My first wine tasting memory — the first time I remember tasting a wine and understanding what the adults were talking about — was Gewürztraminer. It really did taste like rose petals, which I thought was so cool.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? They offer an incredible variety of flavors and character, thrive in a variety of climates and soils, and can be remarkably valuable in blends as well as on their own.

Thumbprint Cellars

52 Front St. Healdsburg, CA 95448
thumbprintcellars.com

Region:  Sonoma

Owner: Scott Lindstrom-Dake

Winemakers: Scott Lindstrom-Dake

About: Scott Lindstrom-Dake, winemaker and founder of thumbprint cellars, majored in Fine Arts in College. One summer he studied Art History in Florence, Italy, and upon returning inspired, Scott decided to start making wine. His first vintage was tasty and he and Erica drank most of their creation! The holiday came around and as college students, the couple decided to give away some of their prized wine to friends and family. Erica gave Scott a gold ink pen to sign some bottles. It malfunctioned and spewed gold ink onto a bottle. Scott used his thumb to wipe up the dripping gold ink and inadvertently placed it on one of the other bottles. Soon, they were all adorned with one of Scott’s gold thumbprints. A passion and new wine brand were born.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Only one? Hmm, then old vine Carignane (karen yawn). Carignane was the first wine grape I picked and made wine from. Over the years I have been sourcing old vine Carignane to craft as a standalone and single vineyard varietal. The old vines grow lower yields with higher concentration of varietal character. I make this as a mid-weight red and sometimes even serve it slightly chilled. Carignane is also a versatile food-wine.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? I had never heard of Carignane when a friends client offered their “few vines that weren’t picked”. The old head-pruned vines, each like a miniature tree and meticulously pruned all resembling individual works of art. As an art student at the time I thought, “well this should be fun!” From our garage winemaking in 1995 to our current 2026 harvest, I have never been disappointed with our old vine Carignane.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Sharing them with our guests and watching the surprise of discovering something new!

Vezer Family Vineyard

2522 Mankas Corner Rd Fairfield, Ca. 94534
www.Vezer.com

Owner: Frank Vezer

Winemaker: Daniel Benton

About: Vezer Family Vineyard is Frank Vezér’s family winery in Suisun Valley, a short drive east of Napa, where he started making wine in 2001 and released the first vintage in 2003. The estate is built around Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, led by La Salette, a Petite Sirah named for his mother. Guests taste small-lot, handcrafted wines at three properties: Mankas Gardens, the historic Blue Victorian, and the Estate Ranch.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Charbono, it is the one almost nobody orders by name. California has only about 80 acres left, a holdover from old Napa plantings that never caught on, and it still shows up in small Suisun Valley lots, including ours at the Blue Victorian. It gives you deep color and a plummy, minty red that stays lighter and fresher than Petite Sirah, which is exactly why it stays under the radar.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? The first time I met Charbono, someone poured it blind, and I called it a light Petite Sirah that had learned some manners. I was wrong on the grape and right on the feeling, and I have been chasing that inky, minty surprise ever since.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? What I love most is that nobody has decided yet what an undiscovered grape is supposed to be. You get to taste it without a reputation in the way, and sometimes the oddball in the corner is the bottle people remember.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Trousseau

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Jura Trousseau

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? That people just taste from a place of pleasure rather than what they THINK the wine should taste like (as is the case with more typical varietals).

Twice Tyger

15230 Oak Glen Ave, Morgan Hill, CA 95037
www.twicetyger.com

Region: Santa Clara Valley

Owner: Billoo Rataul

Winemaker: Bobby Graviano

About: Nestled in western Morgan Hill on the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Twice Tyger is a boutique producer of estate wines, olive oil and honey. Committed to nurturing the land through regenerative and biodynamic practices, our wines embody this journey – honoring timeless traditions while embracing the renewed vitality of our soil.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? At the moment, Petit Verdot, a Bordelaise grape often referred to a “blender”. However a single varietal offering changed such a notion as the variety offers great color, medium-weight, and overall complexity. Grown in California, this variety ripens towards the end of the season yet even still has great freshness and is jam-packed with broad layers of fruit tones. The variety produces a very food-friendly and engaging style of red wine with enough uniqueness that it sets itself apart from more homogenized, market-popular varieties.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? The first encounter with an undiscovered grape would be Grenache from the Southern Rhone, in particular Chateauneuf du Pape. So bright and fresh yet complex and powerful at the same time. Magnetic wines that could stand shoulder to shoulder with any other wine on the market.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Discovery! It’s the excitement of finding something new is always energizing. In wine, there is so much to discover and that’s what makes it fun.

Ulloa Cellars

2915 Union Rd. Suite C, Paso Robles, CA 93446 ulloacellars.com Region: Paso Robles Owner: Nancy Ulloa Winemaker: Nancy Ulloa About: Ulloa Cellars is a Latina Winemaker-owned brand based in Paso Robles, specializing in the production of obscure white wines made with intention and a little bit of magic. Nancy began her winemaking journey in 2019 with the creation of her Baby Grüner, a Grüner Veltliner sourced from the historic Paragon Vineyard in Edna Valley. Baby Grüner has become her signature wine and holds a very special place in her heart. The growth of her brand is reflected in the expansion of her production now including 8 obscure varieties such as Picpoul Blanc, Vermentino, Verdejo, and Sémillon, amongst others. Nancy also recently launched a sister brand called “The Witch & The Warlock” with her Husband, Tim Small, focusing on obscure reds including Tannat, Gamay, and Sangiovese. Nancy’s wines have captured the hearts of many, not only because of how special the varieties she works with are, but because she uses spiritual and metaphysical methods to infuse her wines energetically. She utilizes tools such as Sanskrit Mantra chanting, positive affirmations, Goddess energy, and Crystal Healing. She also offers Wine & Crystal Pairings for $11.11 in her Paso Robles tasting room, in which she teaches her guests different ways to use the crystals and other healing methods to empower them to find sustainable ways to enhance their lives and take care of their mental health. After the tasting, you take the crystals home with you! The self proclaimed “Wine Witch” has drawn attention from major publications such as Wine Enthusiast (She was recognized as on of Wine Enthusiasts’ 2025 Future 40 Honorees), Wine Business Monthly, and the LA Times due to her energetic wine infusion techniques, as well as her unique approach to building her brand using her personality, proud Latina heritage and unapologetic femininity. Nancy’s contagious positive vibes and her mystical wine babies will undoubtedly bring joy and a little bit of magic to your life. What is your favorite undiscovered grape? My favorite undiscovered grape to work with is Grüner Veltliner, not because it is the first wine baby I produced, but because when grown in California, it can create a full-bodied, complex, savory wine that can turn Red Wine Drinkers into White Wine Lovers. What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? The catalyst for my obsession with obscure whites was Picpoul Blanc. It tasted like nothing I had tasted before, and it really was my “A-ha” moment for the direction I wanted to pursue as a winemaker. The textures, acidity, and complexity were incredible, and that was a turning point in my search for sensory experiences through discovering all the unusual varieties grown in the Central Coast. What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? I love the fact that you can have a sensory experience that can transport you to places you’ve never been. It opens up the doors to pursuing and trying things you’ve never tried. LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DRINK CHARDONNAY!

Vino Tahoe | Pansaré Cellars | Amador Heights

15010 Ridge Road Sutter Creek CA 95685
vinotahoe.com

Region: Sierra Foothills AVA ( Amador county wine heritage district)

Owner: Milind Pansaré

Winemaker: Milind Pansaré

About: Vino Tahoe is the only Amador County winery with a certified organic vineyard, producing over 14 varietals, and wines that have won best of class and multiple awards at the SF Chronicle, Sunset International, and Orange County wine competitions. Every wine is made on estate with small lots between 1-4 barrels. Experience our Viognier, Best of class Barbera, Super Tuscan Sangiovese blend, and our award-winning Primitivo/Souzao blend.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Barbera, Souzao, and Viognier

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Making Viognier for the first time in 2024 was a revelation. This grape used in Condrieu primarily tends to be picked over-ripe in California, which makes it a perfume bomb but lacking in weight. We pick ours at 20.5 brix, resulting in a wine that is only 12% alcohol but exhibits orange blossom, flint, and hazelnut and has substantial mid-palate weight.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Wine is a product of context. By context we mean varietal, weather, soil, and all the traditional definitions of terroir. But context also refers to the context you drink it in. There’s a different wine that’s perfect for each mood, for each food, for each moment. With undiscovered grapes, you get to match the moment with the grape. It’s like having a million musicians in your orchestra to choose from, rather than just the most famous 5. And that’s why we love undiscovered grapes. They widen your horizon, they widen your appreciation of wine, and in fact, they widen your taste.

Vino Noceto Winery

11011 Shenandoah Valley Rd. Plymouth, CA 95669
www.noceto.com

Region: Shenandoah Valley, Amador County

Owners: Suzy & Jim Gullett

Winemaker: Rusty Folena

About: Vino Noceto Winery has grown to produce 7,000 cases of Sangiovese-based wines, including its traditional Chianti-style Sangiovese, Brunello-style Riserva, and several single-block Sangioveses. In addition, Vino Noceto has consistently produced other high-quality Italian varietals, including Zinfandel from the famed “Original Grandpère Vineyard”, Aglianico, Barbera, Trebbiano, Teroldego, and Sagrantino.

What is your favorite undiscovered grape? Sangiovese. It is our largest production variety.

What was your first experience with an undiscovered grape? Robert Pepi, and established, family winery also located in Napa, California, first planted a stony hillside to Sangiovese in 1983 and then expanded their production to valley floor grapes. Vino Noceto, founded by Jim and Suzy Gullett in Shenandoah Valley, California, took the direction of producing food-friendly Chianti style Sangiovese wines. Their first vines were planted in 1986 in a fallow grain field, including scion wood from the Montevina Il Pioggoine source as well as Biondi Santi (Brunello), Altesino (Brunello), and Isole e Olena (Chianti Classico) sources.

What do you love most about the undiscovered grapes? Over the past three decades, California growers and vintners have pursued many grapes outside of the Anything But Cabernet/Chardonnay spectrum. Sangiovese, the wine of central Italy and particularly the Tuscan appellations of Chianti and Brunello, has been one of those. This presentation explores the Italian roots of the noble variety and traces its emergence in California.
